Number 40 on my countdown of Top 40 albums is Kaleidoscope Heart by one of the finest modern pop song writers, Sara Bareilles. Those of you who read it may remember that in September I wrote a post about what makes a great pop song that included five of my absolute favorite pop song writers. (In case you didn’t read it or don’t remember, here is the link https://speakingofthingsthatrule.wordpress.com/2014/09/01/great-pop-song-writers/ ) Sara Bareilles easily made my list. All of her albums include well-crafted and catchy songs, but her second release, Kaleidoscope Heart, is especially wonderful. Thus here it is among my favorite albums of all time!
I posted her songs “Uncharted,” “The Light,” and “Machine Gun” in my pop song post, so here are a couple other songs from this record: “Gonna Get Over You” and “Not Alone.”
This album is remarkably cohesive in sound without each song being exactly alike. Bareilles’ Elton John meets Rick Davies piano style along with a ’50s rock n roll vibe give this album a very unique and fun flavor. Not to mention her excellent voice which is especially showcased on “Machine Gun,” my personal favorite track on the record!
In general, this album is basically a clinic on pop song writing. For the most part, Bareilles sticks to the pop song form of verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-verse-chorus with slight variations here and there. Her verses don’t last too long. Her choruses are catchy. Her bridges are nothing short of brilliant. Every single bridge on this CD provides such interestingly different harmonies without breaking the cohesiveness of the song. Additionally, many of her most clever and potent lyrics take place during the bridges. In a climate of music where bridges are either omitted or consist of a painfully mundane repetition of the same few words, Bareilles’ well-crafted bridges are met by this listener with open arms (ears?).
So, there you have it! Number 40 of this great journey! Tune in next week to find out number 39 on the list! I’ll give you a hint: it is a North Carolina band whose members include brothers and sisters! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! That doesn’t narrow it down at all! You clowns! Guess you’ll just have to come back to find out!
Happy New Year to you all, and have an excellent week! Enjoy some great music!
